Sightseeing around Antalya

(Pre/Post Conference Tour Destinations, 1-5 days)

The perfect location of Antalya offers the oppourtunity to reach a number of quite popular historical and touristic spots. Local travel agencies, which will have information desks at the conference venue, offer plenty of tour options for the attendants wishing to spend some time in the region before and/or after the conference. A selection of the tour alternatives are listed below.

Cappodocia - Land Of The Fairy Chimneys

Three thousand years of history await the visitor to Cappadocia, this fairy-land in central Anatolia. Millions of years ago, Mount Erciyes convulsed the surrounding landscape with a torrent of lava, smothering hundreds of miles. Later, floods, rain and wind sawed away at the table of lava, creating deep valleys and fissures, slopes turned into cones and columns. Lakes and rivers in the area, especially the Kızılırmak River, contributed to the erosion of this layer of tuff stone, giving the region its fascinating shape. There is an array of colours of the rock mingling with colours of the fauna to an impressing symphony. The most famous rock formations known as fairy chimneys - have been sculpted by wind and water through the ages. Water has found its way through the valley creating cracks and ruptures in the hard rock. The softer material underneath has been swept away and the fairy chimneys conical formations protected with basalt caps have been created.
Cappadocia is known around the world as one of the best places to fly with hot air balloons. The spectacular surrealistic landscapes combined with excellent flying conditions allow the balloons to gently drift over and between fairy chimneys, pigeon houses hewn into the unique rock formations, orchards and vineyards – through impressive valleys, each with distinctive rock formations, colors and features – and then float up over rippled ravines for breathtaking views over the region.
Cappadocia is also famous for rock churches and underground cities carved out of the rock from early Christians. The area of Ürgüp Göreme and Zelve is an open-air-museum of churches and hermit dwellings, underground cities are located at Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu.

Pamukkale - The Cotton Castle

Pamukkale is an extraordinary natural wonder. The calcareous waters rise from the ground at a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius and tumble down the mountain from a height of 100 metres, forming pools with cream-coloured stalactites. Water is the architect of this fairy castle or cotton castle - as it is called in Turkish. Together with the adjacent historical site of Hierapolis, Pamukkape has been listed as one of the World Heritage sites since 1988.

Ephesus was an ancient Greek city that was built in the 10th century BC. During the Classical Greek era it was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Apart from its historical significance, the site is also an important religous site. Ephesus was one of the seven churches of Asia that are cited in the Book of Revelation. The Gospel of John may have been written here. The city was the site of several 5th-century Christian Councils, (see Council of Ephesus). It is also the site of a large gladiators' graveyard. The ruins of Ephesus are a favorite international and local tourist attraction. The House of Virgin Mary, which is a major pilgrimage site, is also located very close to the ruins of ancient city of Ephesus.
